Hello.Me Pills

How Do You Side-Step Birth Control Side-Effects?

The majority of the female population of childbearing age in North America use some kind of contraceptive agent for birth control. Oral contraceptives (OCPs) or “The Pill” are some of the most popular forms of contraception, along with hormonal contraceptives like the IUD or patch. A little pill that you take every day; how much easier could birth control get?

However, many women are unaware of the potential side effects that may be seen with this little pill. Frequent symptoms experienced by a large number of consumers include:

  • Bloating
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation or loose stool
  • Migraines
  • Nausea
  • Weight Gain
  • Mood changes leading to anxiety, depression
  • Simply just not feeling like yourself anymore

Dangers of Vitamin Deficiency

Users of the Pill and other hormonal birth control methods are frequently found to be deficient in a number of key vitamins. When this is the case, it is possible that the sufferer experiences a number of unpleasant side effects.

Let’s start it off with the research. Turns out that women with low folate status are more likely to have HPV infections and cervical cancer. Using The Pill for birth control increases this risk of cervical cancer, likely due to the depletion of this essential nutrient, along with others, that protect against the risk of persistent HPV and cervical cancer.

Notice mood changes? Low levels of B complex vitamins, especially B6 and B12, have been shown to worsen depression and anxiety. You guessed it: The Pill is also a culprit in depleting B6 and B12. The use of antidepressants and the first diagnosis of depression has been linked to the use of hormonal contraception, especially in adolescents.

There are a number of other issues which can arise through vitamin depletion incurred by birth control, which is why we created the hello.me Top Up Tonic – designed to replenish the body of these missing vitamins.

So, what else can hormonal contraceptives cause?

The risk of developing Inflammatory Bowel Disease is increased by 30% in those who have taken The Pill, with a specific 24% higher risk of developing Crohn’s Disease and 30% in developing Ulcerative Colitis. Symptoms of digestive upset, bloating, or even fatigue can be a sign that your gut may be affected by your birth control.

Your immune system’s ability to fight back against autoimmune diseases is also deterred, which can significantly increase your risk for multiple autoimmune disease such as Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, and also the gut conditions mentioned above. If you’re taking a progesterone oral contraceptive, your risk of skin and hair-related autoimmune conditions are increased, like eczema, dermatitis, and alopecia.

Can It Lead To Anything More Serious?

Although The Pill does have the significant capability to decrease risk of ovarian and endometrial carcinomas, it can increase the risk of breast and cervical cancer. Compared with women who have never used OCPs, the relative risk of breast cancer increased linearly with the number of years used. Even discontinuing The Pill increased the risk of developing breast cancer.

As mentioned earlier, hormonal contraceptives have this way of depleting vital nutrients. Many of these are needed by your thyroid to function normally. Just depleting zinc, which The Pill is known to do, can prevent you from making thyroid hormones, not to mention the effect of all the other depleted nutrients.

The Pill also depletes selenium, another essential co-factor for building thyroid hormones. If your thyroid is still unconvinced, The Pill increases Thyroid Binding Globulin (TBG) which binds up the thyroid hormone so that it can’t be used.
