The Birch + Fog Guide to Tackling Anxiety with CBD

Tackling Your Anxiety With CBD

Anxiety is a huge obstacle that most people encounter at least once in their life. It can come through in small doses (like the jolt of nausea you get when you are waiting for the elevator and a stranger approaches to join the long ride to the lobby) or it can come through in overwhelming amounts that make even the smallest tasks (like leaving the house) feel like the end of the world.

I used to be too anxious to even go into the dispensary to pick up the medication I needed to subdue my anxiety– talk about a vicious circle. Having anxiety is tough, especially when other people’s responses are to just “get over it” or “chill out”– I would if I could, Brenda! Needless to say, feeling stressed, overwhelmed, panicked or nervous can be debilitating to your self confidence and relationships with loved ones. Fortunately, there are ways to ease your anxieties and push away the butterflies.

What can I do?

The recent cannabis legalization in Canada has opened new doors for people suffering from anxiety. When I am feeling like the walls are closing in on me, one thing I can always count on is the wave of relief obtained from ingesting nature’s greatest gift to humankind. Research on the effects that cannabis has on anxiety is ongoing, but here is what seasoned users know so far:

Don’t sleep on the CBD

When it comes to treating anxiety with cannabis, cannabidiol (CBD) is your best friend. While THC products can have anxiolytic properties– aka properties that treat anxiety– they can be a bit unpredictable and have the potential to make a bad day worse. The mind altering effects of THC can cause paranoia and panic, accompanied by an increase in heart rate and a feeling of intense anxiety. Basically, the opposite of what you are hoping to achieve. With CBD, you get all of the medicinal benefits of cannabis without the psychoactive effects.

Studies show that this therapeutic cannabinoid functions as an effective treatment for anxiety disorders, PTSD and seasonal affective disorder to name a few. This is due to its antipsychotic, neuroprotective, anticonvulsant, antiemetic, and antioxidant properties. CBD has no reported psychomotor slowing, no known negative effect on mood, and causes no abnormalities in your vital signs. Worst case, you might not feel anything but best case, you will experience the calm and relief that you’ve been missing in your adult life.

There are a number of ways to ingest CBD in order to treat anxiety. First and foremost there are a variety of flowers that contain full or high CBD content. If smoking is not your forte, then there are capsules, oils, edibles and topicals designed to provide the highest quality healing for your most stressful days. With the booming market for online cannabis purchases, everything from ordering to receiving and medicating is designed to provide the simplest experience so you can keep your anxiety at ease.

My humble opinion

As a seasoned fogger and longtime sufferer of anxiety, my advice is to start off with any CBD product that catches your eye, and if you find that the effects are mild or non-existent then a nice Indica blend might be what you need to relieve the perpetual ball of led in the pit of your stomach. Indicas are more likely to cause heavy relaxation than Sativas, which typically have more energizing qualities that can make the heart beat a little too fast for your liking. That being said, effects of cannabis vary from person to person. What makes you feel calm and relaxed might make another person feel stressed and anxious so exercise good judgement when self-medicating with cannabinoids.

Research in cannabis is still emerging. More information is released everyday, so we will do our best to bring the latest updates on scientific research and advancements right to your fingertips. As with everything, please use good judgement when consuming cannabis products and exercise moderation. If you are unsure of whether or not cannabis is right for you, we recommend consulting a licensed medical doctor with experience in cannabis. Always obtain products from a vendor licensed to sell medical grade cannabis.
