The cannabis industry is booming, and is estimated to grow to a value of $16 Billion USD in North America alone by 2022 according to Forbes. Despite the heightened interest in cannabis as an industry leader, there are still common misconceptions about CBD.
The biggest misconception is the fear that CBD will get you high. Unfortunately, this fear stops many people from incorporating it into their daily lives.
For the record, pure CBD oil cannot get you high. So why are people still worried about this? Moreover, if it doesn’t make you high, then what does it feel like?
CBD and Psychoactivity– Does it Make You High?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a component found in cannabis and hemp plants. It is one of over 100 different cannabinoids produced in these plants along with other substances like terpenes, flavonoids, and the commonly known THC.
CBD is often thought of as a substance that can create a high when ingested, but this is incorrect. In actual fact, CBD is processed by the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our bodies, and does not react with the brain as THC does.
A number of different studies, such as this study by NCBI, have concluded that CBD does not possess the ability to actually make you high.
This is due to the fact that CBD is not processed in the same areas of the brain as THC. Instead, CBD is processed by p-450 enzymes in the liver, which is completely different than the way THC is processed.
In short, we need to stop associating CBD with THC because they are two completely different substances and they are processed very differently in our bodies. The only similarity between them is their origin — cannabis and hemp plants.
CBD in Hemp Oil – Does it Contain THC?
More often than not, CBD comes diluted in hemp seed oil as a carrier and it is frequently thought that hemp oil can make you high.
Fear not! CBD in hemp oil is the same as CBD in olive oil or coconut oil, because hemp oil does not contain THC, and cannot make you high.
THC and Psychoactivity
THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the substance in cannabis and hemp plants which is responsible for the high one feels after consuming cannabis.
When CBD is processed by our bodies, it creates effects such as euphoria, amusement, an increase in appetite, faster heart rate, the feeling of time slowing down and the loss of time-tracking abilities, among many others.
But THC can also cause what is called a “bad high”, which can cause you to experience anxiety, paranoia, confusion, nausea and vomiting, among other symptoms.
In short, THC most definitely does cause a high. In fact, the reason hemp does not get you high is because it has a very low THC content, much like low-THC strains of cannabis.
What Does CBD Feel Like? – What to Expect
To be quite honest, there really is no specific feeling caused by CBD — other than the absence of a lot of other feelings.
CBD is known to treat pain, to calm nerves, to soothe anxiety, to lessen irritability and, in some cases. to energize you.
Basically, CBD doesn’t feel like anything.
When you take CBD, you can expect to feel relief, to feel calmer or clearer, and nothing more. No giggles, no lightheadedness, no nerves, and definitely no high.
Many people take CBD to feel relief from ailments such as pain, anxiety, irritability, sleepiness, and stress– not to mention symptoms from ailments such as acne, MS, PTSD, chronic pain, eczema, and others.
In Canada, Do Any CBD Oils Contain Enough CBD to Make You High?
It is important to note that there are three different types of CBD oil:
- CBD Isolates
- Broad Spectrum CBD
- Full Spectrum CBD
CBD isolates are usually 99% pure CBD in an isolated form (crystals, powder, wax, or liquid). Broad spectrum CBD is the same as CBD isolates, but it also contains vitamins, minerals, terpenes, flavonoids, and fatty acids found in cannabis and hemp plants. Full spectrum CBD is just like broad spectrum CBD, except it contains micro-traces of THC.
But while full spectrum might contain small traces of THC, this does not mean that it is enough to make you high.
In fact, Canadian law only allows CBD products to contain less than 0.3% THC. Otherwise, it cannot legally be sold.
0.3% THC is not nearly enough THC to make you high by any means, and is merely included in full spectrum CBD to impart what is called the “entourage effect” which basically states that THC and CBD work best together.
So, by Canadian law, CBD products cannot contain even a small fraction of the necessary amount of THC to make you high, therefore there is no need to worry.
It is important to mention that regulating CBD products has proven an interesting task, and there have been cases where products contain more than 0.3% THC which certainly poses a problem.
There are ways to make sure that your CBD does not contain more than the legal amount of THC:
- Checking lab test results provided by the company
- Checking 3rd party lab results
- Only buying from trusted brands that are reputable and reliable
- Sticking to CBD isolates
Final Thoughts
Since CBD oil cannot make you high, if you feel like you would like to try it out then there are many different products and methods that you can start with.
Just make sure that you buy your CBD oil from trusted brands, and if you’re in doubt of the THC content in a product, always check before consuming it!
Other than that, you should not be worried about taking CBD and then feeling high. So now, you can go about your CBD journey confident in knowing that it is incredibly low risk and rewarding to your body and mind.
