Does CBD oil get you high? A beginner’s guide.
The cannabis industry is booming. Some analysts say that, by 2022, the industry will be worth $16 Billion USD in North America alone. But even though it’s becoming more popular than ever, there are still common misconceptions about CBD. And the most common is that CBD can cause a high, because its made from cannabis plants.
But CBD oil can’t get you high.
Why CBD Won’t Give You A High
It’s perfectly understandable that people assume anything that comes from the cannabis plant will cause a high, especially considering the long history of cannabis abuse, addiction and crime. But that assumption couldn’t be further from the truth.
Scientists have picked the plant apart and discovered that it contains vitamins, minerals, terpenes (which gives plants their scents and flavours) and cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are chemicals that are unique to cannabis plants, and there’s over a hundred different kinds, each causing their own effects.
On further investigation into these effects, they realised that one cannabinoid specifically was responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis use, or the high as we call it. This cannabinoid is known as THC and has become pretty infamous since then.
Lots of studies (like this one) have explored the effects of CBD and tried to assess if there are any circumstances when it can cause a high, but none have found anything to suggest that there are. The science behind it all is kind of complicated, but in simple terms THC and CBD trigger different parts of the brain.
That’s why THC causes a high and CBD doesn’t.
THC still has a number of health benefits and is especially popular for pain relief. You can buy THC oil tinctures as well as an enormous range of other THC infused products, if the high is something you enjoy. But if you don’t, you’ll be pleased to hear that in Canada, CBD products can’t have more than 0.3 percent THC content, which is way too tiny to cause anything close to a high. Great news for anyone who wants to enjoy the many benefits of CBD without getting the midnight munchies!
What does CBD feel like? Here’s what to expect.
There really is no specific feeling caused by CBD, other than a reduction in whatever symptoms or issues you’re trying to treat with it. CBD is used to treat pain, to soothe anxiety, to help sleep and even sometimes to boost your energy levels.
Of course, successfully treating these things could lead to big improvements in your mood but that’s less to do with CBD and more to do with whatever wellness challenges you were struggling with.
In our experience, most women who are thinking about incorporating CBD into their self care practice to treat a condition or everyday ailment want to be able to do so without worrying about negative effects on their work or family lives. You want to be able to take your CBD capsule with your morning coffee and still be perfectly safe to drive your kids to school. Or keep a CBD tincture in your desk drawer at work for big presentations, without worrying that it will make you forget your presentation.
We get it.
If the idea of a high was holding you back from all of the benefits that CBD has to offer, you can rest assured that no CBD product is going to give you the giggles or slow you down.
Just make sure that you buy your CBD oil from trusted brands—such as the ones stocked here at B+F—who value plant-based women’s wellness and responsible customer education. And if you’re in doubt of the THC content in a product, always check before consuming it.
