People Are Turning To Skincare As They Stay Inside And Self-Isolate
As Canadians are forced to shut themselves into their homes during the coronavirus outbreak, many are finding comfort in their skincare routines as something that remains consistent and positive as the days pass by.
Business Insider shares that according to NPD data released on Wednesday, US prestige beauty sales grew 3% in January and February, with skincare outperforming makeup and fragrance. For the week ending February 29, dollar and in-store beauty sales grew 4%, while skincare increased 13%.
“Personally, due to a positive coronavirus case in my community, I am on day seven of social distancing,” NPD’s beauty industry advisor Larissa Jensen said in a note on the data. “I have washed my hair once and worn no makeup in that time. My skincare routine, however, remains intact.”
Are other women following the same pattern? Jensen is curious to see “How these behaviors play out in NPD’s weekly beauty sales as we move through March.”
A quick scroll through social media (and the feedback and reviews we have received) seems to indicate that Jensen is far from alone in turning to skincare during self-isolation and quarantine.
“I’ve had basically all my routines thrown off by the pandemic and there’s not a lot to structure my day around anymore, but my skincare routine wasn’t impacted,” said Amy Brown, who described skincare as the “only true constant” in her life right now on Twitter.
“It’s something from before all this happened that I can hold onto, makes things feel a little more normal,” Brown added.
Raina, Toronto based blogger and content curator uses CBD Infused Nectar Oil, and shares that “It’s common and totally normal to feel afraid and stressed during a pandemic or outbreak. But taking time away from the noise and focus on yourself can help ease those feelings. Making time for self-care during a self-quarantine is important for your overall health; I’ve woven skin-care into my daily schedule.”
CBD infused serums, when applied topically, are clinically shown to have cell-regenerating and anti-inflammatory properties – perfect for when that stress and anxiety really flares things up. “It has become an essential part of my skincare routine. I apply a few drops twice daily for optimal healing,” says Raina.
The unpredictable future and added stresses we are experiencing right now can cause spikes in cortisol and lead to breakouts and unexpected reactions from your skin. So while we not only have time to spare to do a lengthy skincare routine everyday, its almost more needed than ever. Not to mention that only seems right to spend the extra minutes (and money) on having flawless skin if we have to spend our whole day with our cameras in our faces on Zoom calls and FaceTime chats.
Rosé Toronto, a clean beauty company with plant-based products, posted on Instagram that “The added stress we are experiencing right now can cause your skin to react and change…this does not mean your skin is “bad” – it just means your body is sending a message that you may be under stress and will have to manage it.”
“Factors like dehydration, increased caffeine intake, lack of vitamin D, and changes in nutrition and sleep patterns can affect what happens to our skin, and change our immune system’s ability to regulate and detoxify, creating inflammation in the body.” It’s suggested to heavily moisturize with a face oil like Rose Face Oil morning and night.
Even though it’s the most obvious to care for the skin on your face, a skincare routine can include other parts of your body.
A formula like the LOA Botanical Beauty Elixir extracts terpenoids and other phytonutrients into organic hemp seed oil, creating a light-weight moisturizer that makes a great base layer for makeup (even though you’re probably no wearing much), an everyday moisturizer, or a deep conditioning treatment for hair and nails.
Jensen says it is still uncertain how the coronavirus outbreak will ultimately impact the beauty industry. NPD data through March 7 shows the steepest declines in in-store sales occurred in the most recent week. Online seems likely to grow as customers are left with no other choice.
“This is our new normal, for the time being,” Jensen wrote in Wednesday’s note. “The uncertainty ahead of us is unequalled and its impact remains a question. But the eternal optimist in me knows this too shall pass.”
