Photographer removes our smartphones to show our strange and lonely new world

There’s a good chance you’re looking down at your hand and reading this on your phone. But how would that same pose look if you were holding nothing? Strange? Kinda creepy? As more of us are born into the never-off world, where the buzzing and dings of notifications is the new normal, this hunched posture is nothing out of the ordinary. It’s harder than ever to stay present, often at the price of ignoring beautiful surroundings and opportunities for human connection.

Five years ago, American photographer Eric Pickersgill launched “Removed,” a photographic series that aims to show us how strange and lonely our world has become. Each portrait features still moments from everyday life, with one exception—electronic devices have been “edited out” (removed before the photo was taken, from people who’d been using them).

What we’re left with is a visual tale of people staring at the empty space between their hands, against a backdrop of beauty, or ignoring the people in their immediate presence. The results are a bit sad and eerie—and a reminder, perhaps, that in an effort to become more connected, we’ve only become more alone.

Sometimes it takes a little bit of outside help to become more grounded. Our Foggers use CBD to help relieve anxiety, drown out the noise, take the edge off, and get rid of a bunch of stressors (including pain and acne) that prevent us from experiencing more of the moments that matter.
