Blog 4 of 4 | The B+ F Period Program
April 6, 2021
For a long minute we have been dialoguing, exploring natural remedies to help ease the suffering many of us endure each month. Numerous accounts tell of promise in using cannabidiol as a cure-all for period pains. Some findings are masked as ambitious at best, and seem to put a lot of pressure on any one specific CBD elixir at a time. After focusing our attention to this topic and in the spirit of seeking answers, we have sampled the whole gamut of CBD delivery mechanisms and are excited to now share our findings.
If you have ever experienced unpredictable flow, severe pain, out-of-whack hormones or (insert other menstrual symptom here) then we know just how you feel. It is exhausting in and of itself - trying one mildly effective remedy after another, enduring decades of monthly suffering, so much so that calling quits on the search for relief, has ofttimes seemed like an acceptable solution. Wearied, we repeat to ourselves - just accept this as a part of life, it can not, will not get any better.
Awwww c’mon, say it ain’t so.
A light bulb moment. Fine. Maybe, just maybe there is no simple answer, no single cure. For if there was, wouldn’t we have already aimed for an endless supply of this miracle to share with women the world around. Maybe it is time to think more holistically, to embrace a new world of ideas, to consider a program, a collection, something bigger, something more comprehensive.
There is an effective natural treatment for period cramps. It is neither magic nor made up of something solo. Turns out that it is a sweet little family of remedies, some for daily use, others for periodic use (no pun intended) and a select few for our sacred, self-selected, self-care ritualistic use. The treatment then, is a whole approach, something a little more strategic -
a period program.
Without a doubt. Studies have shown that women who ingest CBD daily at sufficient doses to address their period related pains, report reduced severity of symptoms after only 90 days of consistent use. Seems like a drop in the bucket for a decades long re-occurrence. For edibles we vote for either the B+F Natural Capsules or the Natuur Full Spectrum Tinctures, both well formulated, and safe as long-term daily additions to your nutrition and/or pain management program.
Multiple studies have been conducted that show taking CBD regularly may be very helpful in boosting focus, aiding in sleep, and providing relief from pain and anxiety in a way that is all-natural. Edibles like the signature line of B+F CBD Capsules are as good as they come. We are true fans of these carefully crafted little ovals. Each variation is categorically designed to treat specific ailments from anxiety to sleeplessness or lack of focus. For period pain distinctively, we recommend either the Natural or the Relief formulations. Follow the brand recommended guidelines and aim to take the capsules at regularly spaced intervals.
Full spectrum CBD capsules and tinctures are most effective when used daily and as a long-term, supplemental preventative. Meet Natuur Full Spectrum Tinctures, a certified organic line of premium CBD tinctures that focus on supporting a healthy lifestyle through plant-based medicine. Natuur flavoured CBD oils feature the best components of the hemp plant combined with essential oils and natural flavours like invigorating lemon ginger or soothing mint, allowing you to reap all the benefits from one bottle.
Deciding between tinctures or capsules comes down to personal preference. The capsules are easy to swallow soft gels presented in a convenient 1 a day, 30 day jar. This makes having your supply for the month a no brainer. Tinctures can be readily added into beverages or meals or can be taken sublingually using the handy dropper bottle. It may be nice to have both options on hand should there be a shift in your desired delivery mechanism but we suggest sticking with either capsules or tinctures for the first couple of months.
As with any supplement, it is important to monitor the results, then as you wish, explore the other form of edible ’til you decide on your favourite, or perhaps consider alternating between capsules and tinctures from month to month. More importantly, be mindful of your dosing schedule. Taking CBD daily supplements at or around the same time each day and in the same quantity should help you to stay on track and will support the remedy to be its most efficacious.
The extraction process for full spectrum CBD oil keeps the entire spectrum intact including cannabinoids, compounds and terpenes and researchers regularly promote this ‘entourage effect’. Unique anti-inflammatory assistance and oodles of other health benefits have been discovered, linked to the interaction of cannabinoids with the human endocannabinoid system.
These cannabinoids are powerful agents when it comes to combatting inflammation. Sounds a little tongue twisting, but physically the effects are surprisingly ‘detangling’. That is correct. Once the full-spectrum CBD is flowing through your system you may even get to a place where you consider stretching out on period days- a fully extended recline, leaving that cramp-fuelled foetal position forever behind.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs inhibit the production of prostaglandins, the chemicals that trigger uterus contraction and the release of the lining. While anti-inflammatories may not shorten the length of your period they certainly help to ease the related symptoms. There is a however a staggering amount of other known side effects from long term or regular use of NSAIDs. Fortunately, for those of us with lady parts, full spectrum CBD oil is here to stay. This wonderful NSAID alternative is now offered in a variety of vessels, and has made its way into the medicine cabinet, the cookie jar, the tea cupboard and everywhere in between.
As described in more detail in the first of this series, when ingesting CBD oil intended for use as a natural anti-inflammatory, the benefits are significantly increased once the CBD has had time to settle into your system, as a preventative used daily. One CBD capsule is certainly not a replacement for one Midol, but nature didn’t design it to be so. Eat your greens they say. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. A CBD edible - something something - daily. This is where and how we will notice the indelible, slower release benefits
It can be tough to decide on a delivery mechanism with so many CBD products on the market today including everything from suppositories to local honey to craft chocolates. For fast acting pain relief our attention for today is on topicals. With the added reassurance of being non-intoxicating, CBD is absorbed directly through the skin, where it binds to cannabinoid receptors through the pores, helping to reduce swelling or inflammation.
Many women endure more than cramping, with period related symptoms such as headaches and migraines, swollen breasts, and neck, back or joint pain adding more to this already painful lunar mix. Hopefully, as of now, there is already enough CBD floating through your system from your daily use tinctures or capsules, that you are already noticing a significant reduction in pain this month. Reaching for a CBD capsule at 2am when you are screaming to the heavens for help certainly won’t provide you with the immediate relief you so deserve. For these inevitable moments, having a CBD topical on hand is a must.
The Birch and Fog 1:1 pain sticks with 125mg of THC and 125mg of CBD, are true gems. Choose between heating or cooling effects, with either the spicy mint or the peppermint, respectively. Created with consideration these pain sticks combine ingredients such as arnica oil, menthol crystals and juniper, included to quickly target high pain areas such as the abdomen, chest or lower back.
For moderate pain, two strokes applied directly to the skin in the areas where the pain is heaviest, will activate the CBD to attenuate menstrual symptoms. For more severe pain apply four strokes, and re-apply in an hour should the pain persist. Try massaging or kneading the formula into the skin once applied, as this will expedite the process of penetration and will double as a calming endeavour to temporarily distract you from the pain you are otherwise succumbing to.
There are several key areas targeted through reflexology massage to directly assist with female discomforts. Applying CBD topicals to these areas may further their fast acting effects on period pains. The outer areas of the feet are known to link to the ovaries and to the pelvis; the inner areas, to the uterus and portions of the spinal column. Both the Birch and Fog 1:1 pain sticks and the Me Unclouded Headache Roller could be applied to these areas, provided you are somewhere sans-shoes and with a little privacy.
Me First crafted their CBD headache roll-on using a powerful blend of ingredients to deliver a highly effective product that melts away tension. The unique roller ball with 200mg CBD per 10ml roller applicator targets pressure points and swiftly dissolves pain. Apply it liberally to the wrists, temples, or as described above- to the inner and outer feet. The size of this roller makes it very portable - an essential for a clutch, carry-all or your mom-jean pockets.
This brings us to the third component of the B+F period program - the fun part - the self care, the relaxation rituals. Taking the time for a little me space offers so many physical and mental health benefits simply by affording yourself the time to pause. Turning these moments into a ritualistic affair is true unicorns and rainbows. Find time on one of the evenings of your period days to slow the clock a little. Pour yourself a hot cup of CBD tea to aid in reducing anxiety and tension and to gradually ease your way into relaxation mode.
This is the time to put on soothing soundtracks, light a few scented candles or a diffuser laced with your favourite fragrant essential oil. Sip your CBD tea in as peaceful a setting as you can create. These teas take around 10-15 minutes to kick in, and the effects are subtle with the CBD-only blends being non-psychoactive. There are several cannabinoid friendly herbal teas on the market, and for our period program we’ve selected the Temple Infused Teas by MOTA, available in both CBD or 6:1 THC:CBD blends.
When you need a break from aches and stresses, these soothing teas have you covered. Find 120mg in the CBD infused tea with notes of peppermint and lemongrass to provide a fresh taste and fragrance while the infusion of ginger and carefully measured CBD tackle discomfort. For added pain relief opt for one of the 6:1 THC aromatic blends with flavours from around the world including Egyptian Chamomile, Moroccan Mint or Lemon Sencha.
While the 6:1 ratio of THC to CBD has a big impact on pain relief, it may leave you feeling a little bit of a buzz, so if the sensation of feeling high is not something you are after, stick with THC-free, CBD infused options. In either case, the goal is to unwind, so partake in another relaxing ritual, pair your tea with a good book or ease your way into a freshly drawn bath.
Our favourite new bath treats are CBD infused bath salts. Designed to promote a calm sense of well-being, it should come as no surprise that we have included these in our official period program. Often CBD bath salts contain cannabidiol in combination with a selection of other essential oils and either Epsom or Himalayan salts. It has been revealed that CBD may have unique relaxation properties when inhaled. This finding supports what we experienced when test-driving the CBD bath salts, as we were likely to have inhaled CBD through hot bath vapour (steam), along with the other more fragrant and calming essential oils found in the products.
A nice soak in a bath blessed with CBD salts is such a gift- particularly on high stress, or heavy pain period days. Check out the Kootenay Labs Sacred Bath Salts available in two different blends - Sacred Salts CBD & Sacred Salts 1:1. Each bag begins with a base of holistic, hand-picked ingredients which includes dried grasses, flowers, essential oils, and therapeutic salts. The addition of CBD and THC adds an invaluable boost by helping your muscles and mind to completely de-stress from the outside, allowing you to truly focus inwards.
Our other top pick relaxes the body, restores balance, and soothes your soul. The salt base starts with magnesium rich Epsom salts, pure Himalayan pink salt, and salt from the Dead Sea meant to draw out toxins and calm the body. It is enriched with skin-nourishing Jojoba oil, Sweet Almond oil, and Argan oil, while the arnica combined with a unique blend of terpenes, lavender and clary sage, promote deep body relaxation. Allow yourself 30 minutes for pure decompression in the Me First CBD Bath Soak, hand-crafted for detoxification and relaxation.
We’ve mapped out two to three days a month, mere suggestions on how and when to incorporate CBD baths into your relaxation rituals. Keep in mind - the more self-care time you can fit into your monthly cycle, the better. This is the time for devotion.
Oooof. That was a lot to get through. Not only compiling all of this information, but also the process of putting together what we feel is the most comprehensive and healing period program around. Congratulate yourself too. If you are still reading this- you have already made your way to that indulge-in-a-novel part of the relaxation rituals, for this blog edition is truly long - novel long.
Thank you for staying with us. Take some time to soak this all in. A regular bath will do for tonight and until you get your hands on some CBD salts.
Slow and steady wins the race. The B+F Period Program has been thoughtfully curated, painstakingly driven by pain- period pain that is, and by the sheer determination to collectively put together a program that will lead us all to experience a month, or ideally, a month-after-month, of reduced swelling, better moods, better sleep, less anxiety, less inflammation, more me time and best of all, effective pain management. Time for a new cycle.
Stay tuned. The complete B+F Period Program is en route.
Part 3 of a 4 part series on a period main relief | Relaxation Rituals
Mar 24, 2021
Oooooh yes! The best part of period pain relief- relaxation rituals. We have been surprisingly committed to following our daily dose of CBD capsules, we championed our way through as the world truly seemed to be coming to an end by reaching diligently to those 3:1 pain sticks.
We’re still here. We made it.
Somehow, another night has passed, another day, and almost, yes - almost- another cycle. Hallelujah! Just a few more days. What better time then to carve out a little me-space - run a nice bath, pour a hot cup of tea, and soak those residual tears and pains away. Here in part 3 of 4, we discuss another key to finding period pain relief - Relaxation Rituals.
This hand-selected, B+F cannabinoid period program is truly leading us to salvation.
H*ll yes they do! Baths tend to be most relaxing when warm enough for one to remain in soak- mode for an extended period of time. But don’t shy away from them if you can only find a few quick minutes from your day in which to settle in. There is also something to be said about the ritual, the preparation that is almost as soothing as the soak itself.
Apparently setting the temperature to around or slightly above body temperature or 37 degrees, is a good rule of thumb. Too hot and your skin may no be so happy with you, too cold and well, it’s safe to say that shivers don’t equal relaxation.
We do love the idea of a Scandinavian cold plunge after a calming soak, but many of us are neither equipped with a plunge pool nor a glacier lake right outside the door, plus for period pains specifically, it is important to warm our bodies gradually and from the inside out and to avoid anything too shocking to the system.
When we are in hot water (literally submerged), a balance is achieved between our sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Warm baths also increase blood flow, and so may contribute to less contractions of the pelvic muscles and thereby to a reduction in the pain associated with period cramps.
Consider this a time to pause, to meditate, to zen out. Don’t put a timeline on, just ease in, relax and set your mind and uterus at ease. This is the time to call on your favourite products - pamper yourself, treat yourself like the goddess you are. There really is no overkill when it comes to including healing elements into the mix, ones that will catapult you in to la-la land.
Think of adding candles, your favourite spa radio playlist, they love me they love me not petals, even sliced cucumbers for your eyes. All things wellness and self-care can be summoned here. This is your time to…breathe.
There are many combinations of salts and oils available, but there is something blessed (and convenient) about finding them in one carefully curated product. Who needs the added brain damage from trying to find the right balance or ratios of one ingredient to the next, or from the time spent collecting Epsom or Himalayan salts at one place, essential oil droppers at another.
For these times of the month specifically, it seems optimum to gravitate towards low effort and high reward practices.
We can’t sing enough praise for the Kootenay Labs Sacred Bath Salts. Hand made in beautiful British Columbia, these therapeutic bath salts are made from a relaxing blend of dried flowers and calming essential oils selected to soothe your aches and pains and to calm your mind.
There are two different blends currently available, both of which are a must try - Sacred Salts CBD and Sacred Salts 1:1 THC:CBD. Each bag begins with a base of holistic, hand-picked ingredients which include dried grasses, flowers, essential oils, and therapeutic salts.
Blue magik spirulina found in the 1:1 Sacred Salts, has been known to have high levels of protein, anti-inflammatory properties and an innate talent for quelling any cramping and pain.
The addition of CBD and THC adds an invaluable boost by helping your muscles and mind to completely de-stress, allowing you to truly focus inwards, because you are worth the time.
Blue Cypress oil is added in to the Sacred Salts CBD as it is known to relieve muscle pain and help with cramping and tension. Lavender, another purpose-driven ingredient found in these salts, has been widely studied for use in treating menstrual cramps and many women suggest that regular use has led to less pain and reduced bleeding over time.
Soak for as long as you’d like. It has been recommended to stay in the tub until all of the water has drained out. Visualize the toxins, and stresses being literally sucked away, forever out of sight and mind, right down the drain, in effect a crowning moment for this latest edition of healing
Wait - how did we jump from CBD bath salts to CBD tea, and do the two even go together? Absolutely, and if you recall from above, we really are talking relaxation here, and certainly do not want to wear blinders on the matter. There may be nothing more pacifying than a hot soak, or a comparably calming cup of tea, unless of course, that something is a combination of the both. Who doesn’t love a hug-in-a-mug when reclined in the warm healing waters of a salt-filled tub?
Oh yes, and back to the ritual. Why not start the process of winding down while the bath is still on the way to being half-full.
Relaxation aficionados be warned - you are well en route to achieving tranquility. Steeping yourself a botanical blend with added CBD is the perfect precursor to the sheer sense of decompression you’ll achieve when even that first toe makes contact with the tub water. There is something magically cathartic when relaxation rituals are underway.
CBD tea has been used to treat ailments beyond those related to period pains, but the overlap in areas of relief is illustrious. Given CBD’s role in pain control and as a new class of anti-inflammatory, it is no surprise that ingesting it as a tea has been increasingly shown to support a healthy body, mind and soul.
Look for a blend that includes other natural remedies such as lemongrass, which contains citral- an anti-inflammatory compound, and ginger, known to temper bloating, nausea and severe cramping.
One of the high-performing contenders for our period relief program is the Temple CBD Infused Tea offered in a 12 serving pouch- a more than sufficient leaf count to help you through the month. When you need a break from aches and stresses, this soothing tea has got you covered.
Notes of peppermint and lemongrass provide a fresh taste and fragrance while the infusion of ginger and carefully measured CBD combat discomfort. Whether you are nauseous, restless or anxious, this organic blend will give you the euphoric vibes you need to alleviate distress and support even the most ambitious of your relaxation rituals.
Even if you aren’t suffering with period pains, carving out time for yourself is so beneficial for your overall wellbeing. Getting into a routine of adding self care or a relaxation ritual to your schedule is worth every trade off. Try to get past the fears of missing out - you will come back stronger, more recharged, more grounded.
By using CBD tinctures or capsules as a part of our daily routine and as a preventative, the positive effects are increased over time, reducing the severity of the discomforts associated with period pains.
We can’t expect lasting results from one trip to the gym. The use of CBD teas and CBD bath salts, or moreover relaxation rituals in general, should be approached similarly, and in a preventative, somewhat consistent manner. Incorporate these rituals into your lifestyle- the more frequently, the better. If you need an excuse to get started, then use your #$(*@&*^^ period for good, for change.
Consider one of those cramp-fuelled evenings for a date night with yourself. Let’s face it - if these pains have their way, you aren’t going anywhere anyway - so why not drift away into a little piece of heaven, for you, dear beautiful being, matter after all.
Part 2 of a 4 part series on Period Pain Relief | Edibles
Mar 16, 2021
The short answer is yes. The long answer is yes, and the healing effects are optimized when
taken as a preventative, on a continuous basis. A non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in
cannabis, CBD is a natural and effective alternative for those on the hunt for pain relief caused
by menstrual symptoms. In part 2 of 4 from our series on period pain relief, we explore
cannabis edibles- CBD tinctures and CBD capsules, used comparatively to products such as
oregano oil or Vitamin D, or other innumerable dietary supplements.
For these cannabidiol edibles, it is understood that the maximum benefits are achieved when
including them as a part of your day to day lifestyle. Last week we discussed topicals and
highlighted the impact they have when turned to as a fast acting analgesic. We have gathered
further success stories, this time diving in to the efficacy of CBD edibles, when used on the
contrary, more regularly and for a more graduated and sustainable form of pain relief. While
edibles containing high levels of THC derivatives have been reported to be ‘working better’, it
is arguable that this is because we more rapidly ‘sense’ their effects, though this could be
directly related to our perception of ‘feeling’ high - hmmmm...they must be doing something.
We could argue that when ingested recurrently, CBD has proven to perform well when out of
the limelight, behind the scenes and somewhat free from the intoxicating effects of the more
attention grabbing cannabinoid- THC. There is no need for fancy inhalation devices or
complicated delivery mechanisms here. Following the manufacturer guidelines for use is
simple- with instructions are as easy peasy as take 1-2 capsules daily before bed, or for
example, in the morning with breakfast.
Edibles like the signature line of B+F CBD Capsules are golden- we love these little, easy to
swallow miracle workers. They are available in a range of formulas designed for consumption
at dusk or dawn, and to address specific concerns such as sleeplessness, lack of energy or
anxiety- all symptoms that may accompany us on our monthly odyssey. B+F Natural Capsules
are your daily dose of all the benefits of full-spectrum cannabidiol (CBD) in a traditional oral
form. They involve no fuss and no hassle – just consistent, non-psychoactive dosing so you
can get long lasting results.
When first using any CBD capsules, it is recommended to familiarize yourself with the product
ingredient profile, to ensure you are selecting a product made of ingredients you actually want
to consume. A more focused ingredient list allows for you to readily identify the true source of
benefits, or to quickly eliminate any cause of allergies or side effects. The B+F Capsules are
also available by subscription on a 2, 3 and 6 month basis | subscribe now | saving you (bit)
coins and the stresses of a potential out-of-stock alert, one that would arrive to you mid- cycle of
course. Not so fast. The results aren’t instantaneous, but have patience, good things do come to
those who wait. By committing to using these on a daily basis and over the course of a couple of months,
we gratefully discovered a hidden truth- that their effects really are elevated when the capsules
assume the role of period co-pilot, helping you gradually and over time, to best navigate the monthly ebb and flow.
Researchers behind formal clinical studies have amassed their findings on the wide spectrum
pain management capabilities of CBD, with a handful of reports focused specifically on period
cramps. We have collected and filtered through user-stories, chatted at length with women like
ourselves who have shared their experiences of finally having discovered a reliable product for
period pain management. We have communicated these tales not through the analysis of
charts or laboratory diagnostics, but through heartfelt dialogue over soothing teas or fair
Much of the debilitating pain we experience when menstruating has been linked to
inflammation, caused by the release of prostaglandin. These lipids are involved in the
mitigation of injury and illness. They regulate physiological processes including pain-
sensitization, the induction of labour and blood flow. When menstruating, uterine contractions
aid in expelling a lining, a process often triggered by prostaglandin turnout. It has been
determined that women with higher levels of these hormone like substances, may thereby
experience more relentless cramping during their period.
Though the pluses of using CBD to treat cramps still remains noticeably unsubstantiated by the
scientific community, it was recently discovered that CBD may inhibit prostaglandin producing
enzymes- more specifically COX-2. What does that mean for us? COX-2 inhibitors are a type
of NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) that include aspirin and ibuprofen. These
COX-2 inhibitors block the COX-2 enzyme at the locus of inflammation and when activated, the
potential for irritation is significantly reduced.
COX-1 enzymes activate platelets and protect stomach lining. As NSAIDs are non-selective or
rather, not picky, they influence both the COX-1 and the COX-2 enzymes. The positive effects
such as the alleviation of pain from COX-2 blocking, are often met with adverse effects from
COX-1 blocking. To top it off, many NSAIDs are not recommended for regular use and their
long term side effects can include headaches, dizziness, high blood pressure and even heart
attack- certainly not worthy trade offs for the temporary relief of period pain. There is a silver
(uterus) lining however- studies have shown that CBD does not affect COX-1 and it is as such,
increasingly recommended as a replacement for other heavy-duty NSAIDs or opioids for use in
treating period pain. Be afraid cramps! We are on to you.
Another ally in the ongoing battle against period pain is full spectrum CBD in the form of
sublingual tinctures. Place a few drops under your tongue at the same time each day, and let
the product work wonders in the background. Alternatively, these convenient dropper bottles
easily facilitate the addition of the healing formulas directly into your meals, salad dressings or
even into a cup of sleepy time tea before bed.
Our favourite tincture is the Yoni Relief Tincture for PMS and Menstrual Relief specifically
designed for woman to help soothe pain associated with PMS and menstrual cramps. It
contains a high dosage of TetraHydroCannabinol, (6:1 THC:CBD) along with a low dose of
body-soothing CBD to help deliver those compounds to all of your CB1 and CB2 receptors.
Start by taking these drops at night, an hour or so before bed, to determine your tolerance for
the product. Other ingredients include organic cramp bark, organic elderberries, passionflower,
organic red raspberry leaf, and organic motherwort, along with solvent-free cannabinoid and
CBD oil. This tincture is the perfect addition to your medicine cabinet and is safe for use on a
daily basis or period-ically- no pun intended.
There is no one right answer, no perfect cure but we are certainly getting closer. Together we
can put this needless suffering behind us, though we may need to accept that true healing may
come from a variety of sources, a collection if you will, and thus we must take a holistic
approach. Last week we laser beamed on fast acting topicals, and today we detailed
preventative, daily use edibles. Move over period pains, as next week we cover our third
approach- one more ritualistic in nature and one that further utilizes CBD in all its blessed
forms to help us in fine tuning this close to perfect period program. Say goodbye to those
sleepless nights and monthly tears, for relief you can rely on is finally on the way.
Part 1 of a 4 part series on Period Pain Relief | Topicals
Mar 9, 2021
We are equally as fed up with dealing in these monthly, crippling pains as we are in hearing that there is one cannabinoid product that is the miracle cure for all we experience this or that time of the lunar cycle.
For this Women’s Month dedicated series, we decided to dig deep into the world of CBD and THC products currently available for treating period pains. What we have discovered is a comprehensive program, a highly effective combination of three different approaches to managing those sleepless nights and to reducing the number of hours we spend curled up in a ball begging for anything to make our pain go away. Just say no to any more screaming the likes of ‘leave me alone’, ‘get out of my body’, or ‘get away from me’.
This ever-shrinking globe is abound with women who will attest to the fact that there isn’t one single antidote- natural or synthetic, that will without fail, put these cramps in their place once and for all. If there was, these words would likely have no audience. But here we are, another month past, another month that has without fail, left many of us looking for answers.
Let’s consider this then as an inexhaustible part in-parcel of being a blessed woman, a monthly undertaking, a period cramp program if you will. Each part of this four-part series will be discussing a variety of delivery mechanisms, fast-acting measures, long term preventatives, and ritualistic ‘prescriptions’, all while exploring the related effects that the different products and combinations thereof, have to offer. For those of you that are reading this with a sense of urgency (i.e. struggling to even string two words together while a tightening, burning agony accompanies you with every breath), we are starting the series off for you- with a focus on fast-acting pain relief, one that currently takes the form of 1:1 THC:CBD topicals.
1:1 topicals are made with an equal and balanced ratio of THC and CBD (tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol). Much has been written on the healing and reparative effects of CBD, notably, in the treatment of anxiety, sleeplessness, inflammation and pain. Demonstrated to help promote muscle relaxation these pain sticks work by activating the endocannabinoid system, binding to tissue level cell receptors and thereby alleviating the tortuous, paralyzing sensations of period cramps and other PMS.
In the many known chemical compounds or cannabinoids found in cannabis, the other one most hyped is THC. Though often identified solely for its psychotropic effects (while, of course, if in pursuit of getting high), THC, like its CBD comrade, also possesses a wealth of pain relieving benefits. Well-supported research suggests there to be additional therapeutic advantages when consuming the two together. This synergistic interaction of cannabinoids is often referred to as the entourage effect, and it is understood that better results are achieved than when consuming solely CBD or THC.
By applying these transdermal pain sticks locally and directly to the pain epicenter, you can target the source area quickly and effectively. Try giving the lower abdomen and lower back areas a gentle massage after the pain stick has been applied, to facilitate the formula’s penetration and to further sooth the period cramps. Straight from the horse’s mouth - the results are incredibly fast acting and surprisingly alleviating. I was back to bed within about 15 minutes post-application. *For those who develop tender or swollen breasts, these pain sticks apparently also work wonders when applied by the same method to the chest area.
One of the most popular topicals in the arsenal is the Birch and Fog 1:1 pain stick, available in heating and cooling varieties. Don’t let the 1:1 ratio fool you. Though there is THC in these pain sticks, the psychoactive effects (in terms of the perception of being high) are virtually nonexistent when applied directly to the skin.
This signature formulation bestows an intense analgesic topical in two unique experiences: Deep Heat Spicy Mint and Ice Cool Peppermint. These hero pain relief sticks feature essential oils and antioxidants that help to soothe deep aches and muscle pain, swelling and sprains. 125mg of CBD: 125mg of THC are found in each of the 1oz sticks, alongside of other naturally healing ingredients such as calendula, arnica and Montana oil- all praised as mother earth friendly anti-inflammatories. The deep heat version feels similar to a tiger balm as when applied to achy muscles, and the ice cool option- reminiscent of sucking back a menthol infused cough drop on a brisk winter walk. Which sensation will you choose?
CBD oil has shown promise in treating headaches caused from PMS, migraine and tension. Relief is quick to come by when it is applied topically to the forehead, inner wrists, temples, bottom of the feet or back of the neck. The Me First Unclouded CBD Headache Relief Roller is a real keeper, and its portable, compact size means you can even fit it into the pockets of your tightest denim. The roller ball applicator delivers a powerful blend of ingredients sure to melt your tension away. Stay hydrated of course, and jump at the option to recline, dim the lights, and ease the pressure while in a horizontal state.
If you have ever menstruated or continue to do so, there is a high probability that you have at least once, endured incomparable pain. Are you yet to try these fast acting THC and CBD topicals? Believe you me, period cramp relief can start from the outside, and as more of these cannabinoid friendly topicals continued to be developed, I can more cautiously start to uncurl.
Stay tuned- In the coming weeks we will continue to explore alternative period relief products and their different delivery mechanisms- the goal- to create a comprehensive, user tested, monthly program, one that will holistically and with great care, make crushing these darn cramps possible.

Cannabidiol oil (CBD) products have taken center stage as the go-to for relief of a number of human health conditions including pain, neurological disorders and anxiety. Boutique online and brick and mortar pet suppliers have taken notice, and an increasing number of CBD dog treats are appearing in their windows. But how safe are these cannabis extracts for our four legged friends?
Veterinarians across the board are recommending CBD for their canine patients, specifically to address the suffering from anxiety - distress linked to a sense of fear, or a state of apprehension. Dogs, much like their two legged counterparts, experience the jitters, ones triggered from a variety of sources. They are howling for CBD tinctures, are you listening?
The first priority as the parent, is to identify and where possible, cancel the source of the anxiety. Observe the behaviour of your dog. Their anxiety could likely present itself in ways similar to those as evidenced in humans. Proper socialization and obedience training are key in the prevention and management of dog anxiety. Next, determine whether natural supplemental remedies such as the Natuur CBD Pet Line, are the right fit for your pet. As always, it is recommended to consult with a veterinarian prior to beginning any treatment plan.
Tell tale signs of dog anxiety include:
Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a derivative of the cannabis plant. It is high time that it is recognized for its healing properties. We must consider it uniquely from its cohort - THC - the other more commonly known cannabinoid (and the one rumoured to be behind those tingly, giddy sensations). It is important for differentiation here, as CBD in isolation does not produce intoxicating effects. This detail is significant and is one worth taking into account when shopping for the optimal CBD oil for dogs.
CBD has a calming effect on our neurology. It is non-psychotropic. It is reputed to have a positive impact on the endocannabinoid system, thus helping to regulate pain and to maintain homeostasis - our state of equilibrium of physical processes. This system impacts several mechanisms and has emerged as an integral link between behavioural and neurophysiological outcomes, such as anxiety and stress-management, and the perception of stimuli, both internal and external.
“Every animal with a spinal column also has an endocannabinoid system, so it stands to reason that cannabis can help many species.”

CBD extracts come in a variety of shapes and formulas. Our favourite CBD products for dogs are Birch and Fog premium quality tinctures. Available in a range of flavours, and in easy to use CBD isolate droppers, these products make for effortless, accurate measuring, and are ready to be added directly into your water or food bowls.
The extraction process for full spectrum CBD oil keeps the entire spectrum intact cannabinoids, compounds and terpenes oh my! Full spectrum CBD products may contain some THC, in quantities as low as 0.3%. Researchers often signal a boost in health benefits when these multiple compounds are present, and regularly promote this ‘entourage effect’. As the complete range of cannabinoids may be present in full spectrum CBD, our preference is for CBD isolate when it comes to remedial treatments for dogs.
CBD isolate is the purest available form of CBD and is free from all other ingredients. It is produced with a purity level that can hover around 99% . It does not contain THC - the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. For dogs with dietary sensitivities, or those new to ingesting cannabis extracts, we suggest CBD isolate as a low-risk high reward place to start. Early clinical veterinary studies are encouraging, and many would agree that getting Buddy high while intending to calm his nerves, seems rather counterintuitive. Of course you want the best bet for your pet - so opt only for an A-1 (top shelf) CBD isolate, where product potency, indicators of user trust or reviews, and quality control are assured.
Salmon and bacon flavoured CBD tinctures are designed exclusively for pets and are presented in foolproof dropper bottles, with a variety of potency options to choose from. *Warning: Human bacon lovers may have a tough time resisting the temptation to sneak a few drops of these formulas for themselves.
The best advice we can give you to determine a CBD oil dosing schedule for your dog is to start slow and low - remember, your dog may have a system more delicate than your own. Follow brand specific guidelines and monitor your dog’s response on an ongoing basis. You can always adjust the dosing as you observe the effects of the product and notice a shift in the tolerance.
CBD isolate tinctures come in different potencies, conscientiously formulated for dogs of different sizes. Begin by calculating the milligrams of CBD suitable for your dog, based on their weight. A good point of departure is 0.25 mg of CBD per pound, given twice daily with food. To reduce the need for cumbersome calculations, we’ve included an infographic showing examples of suggested doses by weight.

Anecdotal signs point to yes, as does the steady flux of literature supporting the use of CBD isolate in dogs. With environmental stressors removed, and daily use of CBD oil, many dogs have ‘reported’ a complete emotional shift - a much welcomed departure from their nerve driven behavioural tendencies of yesteryear. Highly effective in treating anxiety and stress in pets, CBD isolate is certainly worthwhile exploring as a therapeutic for these and other veterinary applications.
With oft-fluctuating elements of surprise and a limited control over who or what may be a trigger for anxiety, it is just plain sensible to incorporate CBD isolate into the day-day and long term nutritional program for your canine companion.
Unaddressed or chronic anxiety may influence persistent complications or suffering such as a weakened immune system, life-threatening cardiac problems or the potential for stroke. When used as a preventative, CBD oil contributes to a heightened sense of wellbeing, and an overall better quality of life. What better reason to offer CBD isolate for your dog on an ongoing basis than added peace of mind for you both.
Take the lead on this one. Your dog has spoken.

Across Canada, as stay-at-home restrictions continue into the new year and alcohol consumption continues to rise, we may all be in need for a few alterative drink options to keep our bodies and minds intact. What if there was a sober sip that took you to new heights, while sticking to your New Year’s resolutions?
Here at B+F, we are advocates for total wellness, which includes taking some time to relax and celebrate the small wins and simple pleasures, as well as nice cocktail once in a while. But as always balance is key, so why not give your cocktail a little oomph without the extra OUCH the next day. Enter CBD cocktails, a foodie trend that could have no better time to shine than now. CBD not only enhances the taste of certain classic cocktails, but also enhance the feelings of relaxation you experience from a good sipper.
Beyond its purported health benefits, CBD can lead to a number of different flavor and texture enhancements in certain cocktails. Although it’s natural taste is mostly neutral, it does have earthy plant-like notes that can add a pleasant complexity to certain drinks. Because it is an oil, it also can add a viscous mouthfeel that works well in certain stirred cocktails.
“We’ve found that gin-based drinks and other cocktails with a botanical twist work well, mostly because they’re also terpene-rich,” says Rachel Burkons, founder of the culinary cannabis company Altered Plates.
CBD doesn’t contain THC, and therefore will not get you high, but it will still deliver a little extra sedation and relaxation when added to a cocktail. “It gives you a different kind of ‘buzz’ for a relaxed state of mind,” says Zsolt Csonka, owner-bartender at Adriaen Block, New York City’s first dedicated CBD bar. “After two drinks, you should find yourself feeling calm and mellow.”
For cocktails, you will want to use a CBD tincture that does not include any essential oils or flavour in it’s ingredients, but rather is just a combination of CBD Oil and a carrier oil like Grapeseed of MCT oil. Natuur or B+F CBD Tinctures are both great options.
Here are three of our favourite CBD cocktails whose flavour profiles are fresh while being complimented by the earthy notes in CBD Oil. Not only are these drinks easy to make, but they’ll also look gorgeous on any table and are totally Insta-post worthy. Are you drooling yet?
