CBD Won’t Get You High But It Can Help You Get Some Much-Needed Sleep

Unlike your ex, who’s a part-time DJ and full-time jerk, you can’t just cancel sleep. Luckily for you, we have just what you need — not so much with your ex. You should probably just block them. From ancient Hindu texts to Chinese medical books dating as far back as 1200 A.B., cannabis has widely been praised for its ability to help with a myriad of health problems, including insomnia, pain and anxiety.

Today, we’re still using cannabis to help with sleep, particularly in the form of CBD, or cannabidiol. CBD is derived from cannabis or hemp. It’s non-psychoactive, so you won’t get high, and it acts on receptors that we already have in our bodies (more on how CBD works here).

How CBD enhances sleep?

Similar to the mystery of pyramids — the jury’s still out on exactly how CBD helps with sleep. All we know for sure, is that it enhances the quality of sleep for many of its users.

Some research suggests that CBD helps with sleep by reducing anxiety or general body aches and pains, both of which can make it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep. Other research hints that CBD may also affect sleep directly, by interacting with receptors in the brain that govern the body’s sleep and wake cycles.

Though, the exact mechanism is yet to be discovered, there is no question that CBD plays a serious role in sleep.

CBD is for everyone! Seriously.

Hey go-getter, it’s not all hustle and fun — eventually you’ll have to sleep!

Sleep is as essential to our wellness as food and water. Without sleep, we can’t form or maintain the pathways in our brains that allow us to learn and create new memories — ah, what’s the name of that coffee shop we loved again? And, it’s way harder to concentrate and maintain a good response rate — in other words, that’s why we sometimes drop the ball at practice or even at work.

Sleep is complicated but it doesn’t have to be. CBD can be the Maestro of your neurotransmitter orchestra to keep everything in tune.

Sleep starts at the molecular level with neurotransmitters — chemicals that acts on neurons in the brain to tell our bodies whether we should be asleep or awake. These neurons switch off the signals that keeps us awake. Once these neurons have told our bodies that it’s time to go to sleep, we’ll pass through the 4 stages of sleep.

After we’ve passed through the stages of sleep, we enter a REM sleep. In this stage, our eye movements speed up and our brain becomes more active, processing things that we’ve learned during the day to help us form memories and boosts feel-good chemicals such as serotonin.

Sleep is basically the  housekeeper for your brain. Storing important memories and throwing out what isn’t relevant. Without restful sleep, your brain remains cluttered and unfocused.

What’s affecting my sleep?

Can we just answer with “life”?

But real talk, there can be many reasons why we’re having difficulty sleeping. Some of the most common reasons are:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Medications
  • Health conditions
  • Sleep environment
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of exercise

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what’s keeping us up at night and it can differ from person-to-person but, you’re not alone. Over 3.3 million Canadians have difficulty sleeping. That’s a lot of people that could benefit from CBD.

Make CBD a part of your sleep and wellness routine and starting seeing the benefits of sleep + CBD.  #SelfCare
